Forced repatriation was long and bloody. Under "Operation Keelhaul," 22,500 unwilling Cossacks & Caucasians resisted repatriation and 3 Russians committed suicide when American soldiers tried to force them on a repatriation ship from Britain (Wyman, p.65).

To make matters even worse, Eisenhower gave unqualified approval to such monstrous schemes as the Morganthau Plan which, had it been carried out completely, would have resulted in the deaths of roughly 40 million Germans and the swift Bolshevization of Europe. He insisted too on the notorious Operation Keelhaul, the "repatriation" of Russian, Ukrainian, and other peoples who had escaped Stalin's hell on earth behind the retreating German armies. Perhaps five million people were herded into trucks and railway boxcars and shipped eastward to certain death or worse. Operation Keelhaul was FDR's and Eisenhower's magnificent gift to Stalin and to his grim, satanocratic gulag empire; it was a culmination of friendship, fidelity, and accord; and it was a deed that for its sheer infamy is unmatched in the history of our nation and its armed forces. Nameplates made for victims of the Tragedy of the Drau, where 2,479 Cossacks, mainly soldiers and officers but also women and children, who had fought against the USSR during World War II were handed over to the Soviets by the British. It was well-known that these people would die as soon as they reached Russia again. When the Cossacks discovered where they were being sent, they attempted to fight the British and escape, but the British bludgeoned them with the butts of their rifles and threw them unconscious, “like sacks of potatoes”, onto the trains.

While the “Massacre at Lienz” is perhaps the most famous instance, these handovers also occurred in Judenburg, Austria (18,000 Cossacks); Graz Austria (50,000 Cossacks, including 11,000 women, children, and old men); and Fort Dix, New Jersey, USA (154 Cossacks).

In the near future I will work on the history of the Ebelsberg barracks in Linz much more in detail and will summarize the results sooner or later in a relevant memorandum.

The barracks complex (which is currently being used as a training center for fire brigade and police, see enclosed picture) is experiencing a certain transformation in the near future.

Accompanying this transformation, I have been documenting the (recent) history of Kaserne Ebelsberg for a while.
On the other hand, my history as a refugee camp should be widely accepted in my new historical work about the barracks.
There are therefore still some eyewitnesses (and the descendants who wilten as children in the Refugee center) are looking for a (remote) interview regarding the then life in the refugee camp Ebelsberg available.

To complete my pertinent documents, I would also be happy about other (private) time historically relevant documents, illustrations, sketches and experience reports.
I also welcome foreign visitors to the barracks complex Linz-Ebelsberg for a local meeting.

7/28/2022 Last Chance to see the Ebelsberg DP-camp in original condition
In the following months there will be the last chance to see the Ebelsberg DP-Camp (Linz/Upper Austria) in original. The Ebelsberg baracks will be modernized and then the Camp will have a total another look.
Some Baracks were demolated actually. 11 Baracks of the former camp will be modernized.
Best regards, Verbal Turbulence Jerrys

For some years now I have been looking at your website and it has been really helpful to me. You have done a massive job.

I am writing to you as I have just completed a new website which has a lot of photos, reports and information on 5 Displaced Persons Camps, collected by my mother, Clare McMurray/Wositzky.

In 1948-51, my mother worked in several camps in Austria and Trieste and brought with her to Australia photographs, monthly reports, refugee art and handcraft.
I decided that it would be wonderful if this material was accessible to the people or their families who were in the camps at the time - hence I have just put it all on a website.

The camps mum worked in Austria were Eisenerz, Kapfenburg, Reid Rehabilitation Centre, and the YMCA Simmer Camp program in Waiern and Ebanesse.
She also worked in Trieste - in San Sabba, Opincina and Gesuiti. The website has a lot of material from all of these camps.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

I am reaseaching on the DP Camp Freiberg in Flossenbürg als known as "Camp Sikorski" or just DP Camp Flossenbürg on the ground of the former concentration camp Flossenbürg. I would like to come into contact with people interested or connected to the DP camp in Flossenbürg. Before coming to Flossenbürg the 2.100 DPs stayed in camps in Austria, mainly in Braunau, Ebensee, Ems, Frankenmarkt, Ranshofen, Wegscheid and Wels-Lichtenegg. Therefore I am happy to share information with researches on this camps, too. Furthermore there was a Jewish DP-Community in Tirschenreuth. As I'd like to focus on the relationship between (mostly) Polish DPs in Flossenbürg und surrounding Jewish DPs, I'd like to get to know more about Tirschenreuth, too.

10/8/2015 Dear Ms Kaczmar,
I am trying to research how repatriation/resettlement was carried out in Feffernitz (and Kellerberg, where the Hungarians were sent in January 1947) and was hoping to hear from some former residents of the camp. I have read Kitty Gogins' book (and have been in email contact with Kitty). It seems that here, as in other places, DPs were reluctant to return to Hungary, but it was very hard to find new countries to go to, meaning some stayed in the camp for quite some time.

I have attached a photo of the camp which might be of interest to former residents. I have also attached a front page of Faklya, the magazine produced by the Hungarian residents of Feffernitz.

If you can identify persons in photo, please email [email protected]:
Row 1 Peter Wuncshl is in the front row, 6th from the right.
Row 2
Row 3 Emil Mezei is sixth man from the right.
Row 4

I was wondering if any Hungarian DPs who stayed in Feffernitz have any memories from the camp, particularly on how they managed to resettle either in Hungary or elsewhere? Did the International Refugee Organisation provide help with resettlement, or were DPs reliant on personal contacts to find a new home?

I am writing an article on repatriation/resettlement after the war from Feffernitz. I have read Kitty Gogins' very interesting book (http://www.amazon.com), but would like to know more stories!

Feb 28, 2023 Hello,

I think my wife’s Great Uncle Peter Wuncshl is in the front row, 6th from the right. Born Feb 2 1898 Died Sept 1 1978. Married to Anna Tabar (March 31 1898-July 22 1992). Her parents were Nicholas and Helena (Bockmuller). They were Danube Swabians from Crnja, Austria-Hungary, which now on the border of Serbia and Romania. They fled Tito’s Molin/Molidorf concentration camp, Founded in September 1945 for the ethnic Germans (Volksdeutsche) from the northern and central Banatrom. They escaped into what is now Romania then to what is now Hungary. Then to Austria. Settled in Cincinnati OH in 1950.

My wife Donna Shultz and I live in Naples FL.

Note, we do not know what Displaced Person camp in Austria they were in but the photo looks like him. Were wives living at that camp as well? We do know that a Danube Swabian from their area went to the Feffernitz camp from Hungary.

Subject: Feffernitz picture Dear Ms. Kaczmar,

I am writing to you from Pécs, Hungary. I have just found your uploaded picture about the Feffernitz Camp residents and I have probably found my grandfather on the photo. He sits in row 3, he is the sixth man from the right. His name is Emil Mezei.
I send you now three pictures about him, please help me in verifying him. The one with the hut and another person was made in Feffernitz.

Waiting for your response,
best regards:

6/1/07 Dear Olga,
Thank you for you work on maintaining the DP Camp website.  I was extremely excited to find it.

I would like to provide you information on a DP camp my father's family lived in 1945-1947. My father's family DP Identification lists it as: "Autrich, Feffernitz bei Feistritz Lager".  He always referred to it as Feffernitz (Weissenstein).  It was close to Graz in the British zone.  I have enclosed a picture of the main entrance to the camp.  The camp residents were exclusively Hungarians.

I have a variety of documents from his stay there and a videotape discussing his war and post-war experience.  He wrote a novel during his stay that is set in the camp and is about a Boy Scout troop.

I am currently trying to write a book about my parent lives, and have the first draft of the chapter about his stay in this camp. If anyone has any information they could share with me about this camp, I would greatly appreciate an email. Thank you for your assistance,

Dear Olga !
When I tried to learn more about the DP camps in Austria (especially in Styria), I found your great Website, where I saw the pictures of John and Miff. So, my question is, if you own pictures (or information in general) about the camps in "Admont" and "Frauenberg", both in Styria (British occupation zone) or if you know somebody, who lived in one of these camps?

The location of Frauenberg is not known exactly by me (there are more than one village with the name), but I think it is the camp near Admont, that was a former Nazi "labour education camp" (capacity: 200 persons). There exist eye witnesses of the usage for refugees.

Different Frauenberg villages in Styria are near Kapfenberg and Leibnitz (maybe a name conflict ?).

Tony Bodo ([email protected] ), a former inhabitant of several Austrian DP camps posted some information, for example under: http://groups.yahoo.com. Many thanks, Klaus Fohringer

Dear Ms Kaczmar,
I am trying to find out more information about a displaced persons camp in Austria. My father-in-law (who died in 2002) was in the British Army and he would often talk about his time at the camp in 1945. He was deployed to the camp because of his fluency in the German language (his father was German). He said the camp was near a town called Frohnleiten in Austria, I have searched the internet but have found no reference to it, nor can I find it listed on your site. Do you know of where I may access more information about this matter? I am hoping to find some photographs of the camp and perhaps even see my father-in-law in one of them. Thank you for your consideration,

Dear Ms. Kaczmar:
In my book, Resistance, Imprisonment, & Forced Labor: A Slovene Student in World War II (Peter Lang Publishers, 2002 and 2003) I describe in the last chapter (Chapter 15) the life in the DP camp Studentenlager Hochsteingasse 37 in Graz, Austria. I thought that you may be interested in reading my account of the life there from its beginning to my departure in July 1950. The book I mention covers my war years and a few years before that. Not much is in the literature about the DP camps, your information is very useful.

TIME IS RUNNING OUT! Nov. 4, 2007

Francis 'Jan' Lengyl (Lendyl?) was a Hungarian refugee in Graz and possibly had a sister called Ruth.  Please let me know where I can find details of people who were held in these camps 1946 -50.  My mother Octavia Buchta (Austrian) lived near these camps and said she worked alongside Jan and his sister in a garment factory.  They then came to England where Jan went on as a refugee to USA possibly posing as an Austrian to start a new life.  He is my father and I would like to contact him if at all possible.

Thank you. God Bless.
